Two Bridges Ride Video
On Saturday April 19th, Katie Marshal strapped a video camera on her helmet and caught the B ride going over Bear Mountain Bridge. It as a great day, see for yourself.
Who are you guys?
Bicyclists who ride in Westchester, Putnam and sometimes Rockland and Dutchess counties. Our members are from New York City, Westchester and Putnam, mostly.
What kind of rides do you do?
All. Sometimes even on dirt. The club has an A to E plus M ride catagory system and we try to schedule a ride at every level every Saturday and Sunday, sometime more than one as long as the start locations are far apart.
During the season, we also have casual rides - flings, we call them - that start and end at the same location every Wednesday and Friday. On special occasions, we have multi-level rides tied to events like the Cinco de Velo first weekend in May. Look at the Ride Schedule page for more info.
Do you race?
No. Some of us ride really, really fast and it may look like we're racing but we're not.
How do I know which ride level to go on?
There are a couple of ways. Take your cycle computer on your next ride and when you get home, note your mileage and average speed. Then look at the ride level descriptions on the bottom of the Ride Schedule page. Please note that the speeds listed are averages; a B ride may average 15 miles per hour, but there'll be parts where you're going 35 mph and parts where you are giving it all to do 3 mph. It's best to underestimate; nobody likes getting dropped.
You can also contact the New Members committee to talk about riding and you could go on one of the E rides and talk to the ride leader.
What does it cost to join?
Dues are $20 per household per year plus $5 if you want someone to print and mail the newsletter to you each month.
I'm really cheap. Can I go on club rides without paying dues?
Guests are welcome on club rides. Contact the ride leader by phone for meet up location; only members can access ride start locations on the website.
What do I get for being a member?
- Access to MyWCC
- Ride reminders
- The monthly newsletter - Plain Spoke'n
- Access to the Cue Sheet Library on MyWCC
- Discounts at local Bike Shops
What's so great about MyWCC?
MyWCC is the club's interactive membership system. MyWCC includes the ride schedule, events calendar, newsletter distribition, member polls, cue sheet library, club photo album, club statistics, ride leader incentives and membership roster. In tech speak, MyWCC is a PHP/MySQL script written by Membership Director Bruce Wells and it rocks.
Where do the rides start and end?
Wherever the Ride Leader says. The most popular start location is SUNY Purchase, because it's centrally located, has plenty of parking and access to awesome roads.
What about meetings?
Yes, we have meetings. The Board of Directors meets once a month in a secure, undisclosed location and discusses important bicycling business; if you'd like to attend, contact a board member. In the spring and fall, the Programs Director organizes Member Meetings, which are usually held at a restaurant and feature a presentation related to cycling. Look at the Events Calendar for more info.
Can I Volunteer?
You sure can. Lead rides, organize events, write news, take photos - did I mention that we are all volunteers? Even me, the omniscent voice that is guiding you now.
Are my membership dues waived if I volunteer?
No.
How do I get one of those awesome ride jerseys?
You can earn it by leading rides. The club has an active incentive program which is described on the Ride Leader Information page. Or you can buy one from the Incentives Director. See the Gear page for more info.
What is the Golden Apple?
Every September, the club sponsors the Golden Apple, a self-paced tour of Westchester and Putnam Counties. We have marked routes of 25 to 125 miles and provide maps, food, rest stops, directions and other services to all riders. The Golden Apple represents the culmination of the cycling season, and many cyclists, members and non-members, come to challenge themselves and enjoy a fully supported ride. We have had over 700 cyclists participating. It's lots of fun for everyone involved.
